Paint fumes at a Workers' Compensation Board office forced 21 state employees to head home early Wednesday complaining of headaches, nausea and the fact that they had to take sick leave.
"At least we don't have far to go to file for workers' compensation," said Carol Harvin, president of the Civil Service Employees Association local at the office at 100 Broadway. About 340 state employees work there.
Most of the those who left early worked in an area that had been painted Tuesday night, according to Harvin and Donna Fennelly, one of the workers who fled the fumes.
