Vic; Firewood giveaway to show wasteful timber practices

MELBOURNE, April 2 AAP - Residents of the community of Blackwood, west of Melbourne, are to supply local families with free firewood this winter to show how much waste isabandoned during logging.

The Blackwood Forest Protection Group said loggers left behind enough waste wood toprovide winter firewood for an estimated 250 families after logging just one coupe closeto the township.

Group spokesman, Nick Dubuc-Timson, said the Department of Natural Resources and Environment(DNRE) left a huge firetrap on the township's doorstep after logging the coupe.

He said the group would clean up the logging coupe by cutting up the abandoned woodand delivering it to needy local families.

"We are constantly told that it is only waste wood that goes to woodchips - this areashows it to be a lie," Mr Dubuc-Timson said.

"Woodchip mills only want whole logs, not branches or trees.

"This is a shameful waste of a resource that will now keep pensioners warm this winter."

The Blackwood group has declared a 5-km Logging Exclusion Zone around the township.

Their action comes as anti-logging activists continued to hinder logging in the Goolengookforest in East Gippsland.

About 50 protesters yesterday blocked a road leading into the forest, where loggerswere working cutting timber in four areas.

The DNRE has created a 25-km exclusion zone around the logging area to prevent protestersfrom delaying contractors working in the forest.

The Goongerah Environment Centre, which is coordinating the protest, said the protestswould continue throughout the week.
